SOMALIA

No date - Gouled Hassan Dourad, a Somali who was a member of a Mogadishu based network allied with al Qaeda. He was involved in several plots, including one to shoot down an Ethiopian airliner in Somalia.

1960 – Somalia alligned with Moscow since independence in 1960. Training for its forces in exchange for bases, for the Soviets and airforce in Berbera, near the Red sea, close to the Suez canal. (The great cold war. Gordon S Barrass ©2009 US).

1969 – Cuba began political and military cooperation with Somalia. Siad Barre.

1977 – When Somalia, a Soviet client, attacked a recently installed Socialist regime in Ethiopia. The Russians switched sides. Those events did further upset relations with the US. (Cold war. ©2005 Gaddis).

1982 – Somalia, on the horn of Africa directly across from the Arabian peninsula, got Soviet arms, aid and allowed the Soviets to build a deep water harbour and airstrip, for the use of Soviet military forces. In 1982 it received arms and aid, largely from the US and negotiated US use of the harbour and airport, built by the Soviets. Ethiopia, its enemy in 1982 received Soviet arms.

December 1992 – al-Qaeda bombed a hotel in Yemen, they thought that the US personel supporting the Somalia operations were there. (Against all enemies. ©2004 RA Clarke).

1993 – Clinton administration. Mogadishu Somalia al-Qaeda role in an attack on America. President Bush sent troops to Somalia to end a famine of 700,000 people. Terrorists were training Aideed’s militia. Al-Qaeda was sending advisors to Aideed. (Against all enemies. ©2004 RA Clarke).

3 October 1993 - 18 US troops were killed in an urban attack in Mogadishu Somalia. Bin Laden and his associates helped train and arm the men who killed the US troops.

2 Dec 1994 – The Achille Lauro sunk off the coast of Somalia. (Chch Star NZ. Today in history. 2 Dec 2015).

1996 – The war in Chechnya was planned during a secret summit of Hezbollah international held in 1996 in Mogadishu.

1996 – Meeting held in Mogadishu Somalia attended by various Islamist armed groups. Bin Laden and Iranian intelligence officers were also there. Plans for Islamic insurgency were drawn up at the meeting.

15 April 1998 – Somalia hostage taking. Somali militia abducted nine red cross and red crescent workers at an airstrip north of Mogadishu. The hostages included a US citizen, a German, a Belgiun, a French, a Norwegian, a Swiss and one Somali. Gunmen were members of a sub-clan loyal to Ali Mahdi Mohammed, who controlled the northern section of the capital.

12 April 2002 – An Ethiopian court sentenced five members of the al-Itihad al-Isamiya, a Somali Islamist group, to death. For bombing attacks that killed 27 civilians in the past ten years. The group is on the US list of terrorist groups and is suspected of having ties to al-Qaeda.

3 Oct 2005 - In the lower Juba area of Somalia gunmen shot dead a Somali national and UN security official, Mohamuvd Mesre Gurage.

July 2006 – Iran sent more than 700 Islamist militants from Somalia to Lebanon, to fight alongside Hezbollah in the war against Israel, a UN report said. The report seen by the New York Times sad the militia in Lebanon provided training and weapons to the Islamic alliance, fighting for control in Somalia.
